Hobby and skill classes are one of the largest tuition categories in Coimbatore by search demand, larger than several academic categories. Drawing leads it, followed by baking, tailoring and aari work. This page covers what these cost and what to check before joining.
What it costs
The one public rate card for Coimbatore, Tutor Bureau, lists these for one-to-one private tuition:
| Class | From (per hour) |
|---|---|
| Drawing and painting | ₹1,000 |
| Music and guitar | ₹1,200 |
| Dance | ₹1,500 |
| Yoga | ₹1,200 |

Very few people pay these rates. Most art and craft teaching in Coimbatore is sold as a monthly batch or a fixed-length course, and group rates are far lower per session. Ask for the monthly total and the number of sessions it covers.
Materials are the hidden cost
This is the single most common surprise in this category. Ask before you enrol:
- Baking: ingredients, and whether you take the output home.
- Tailoring: fabric for practice pieces, and whether a machine is provided or you bring your own.
- Aari and embroidery: frame, needles and thread. The frame is a one-off but not always mentioned.
- Art: paper, paints and brushes, especially for anything beyond pencil.
- Pottery: clay and firing, where firing is often billed per piece.
On a short course, materials can approach the course fee. It is a fair cost, but you want to know it up front.
If you want to earn from it
Aari work, blouse stitching and home baking are established home-based income routes in Coimbatore, and plenty of people join these classes with that in mind. If that is you, say so at the enquiry stage and ask three things:
- Does the course cover costing? Knowing what to charge is the skill that separates a hobby from an income.
- Where do I source materials, and at what price? A teacher already buying in bulk is a genuinely useful contact.
- Does it teach finishing to a saleable standard? Practice-quality and sellable-quality are different, and courses often stop at the first.
A teacher who answers these well is worth more than one with a nicer studio.
Checking a class before joining
- Ask to see student work from the last batch. Not the teacher’s own work. What beginners produced after the course tells you what you will get.
- Batch size and equipment. Six students and two sewing machines is a problem. Same for one oven.
- Is it a fixed course or an ongoing monthly batch? Both are fine, but they are priced differently and it is worth knowing which you joined.
- Trial or observation. Many teachers allow you to watch one session. Take it up.
- Timings that survive contact with real life. Weekend and morning batches fill fastest here.
Children’s batches
Drawing, painting and craft classes commonly run separate children’s batches, usually at weekends and heavily during summer holidays. Ask about the age range in the batch rather than assuming, because a class mixing seven-year-olds and teenagers rarely serves either well.
